THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE FILMS IN 2013
24. End of Watch (Ayer, 2012) - 24th JanuaryStarring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Anna KendrickSynopsis: A police officer who decides to film his and his partner’s shifts for an art elective at college captures more interesting footage than he was expecting.Standout Character: Mike, played by Michael PeñaFavourite Quote: “I don’t really know how to write, uh, but I do sign, and draw pictures.”Summed Up: If I were to list my top five weirdly specific sub-genres, Los Angeles Police would definitely be right up there, so I had very high hopes for this movie. I’m a huge fan of The Shield and Southland, and this felt like an extra-long crossover version of those. I had no idea that it was shot in a documentary style, either, which was really interesting. It did kinda switch between that style and a more conventional one, which was a bit jarring. I think if you’re going to do the doc style, you go big or go home, not jump in and out of it, but it’s a minor complaint, as the style made certain scenes way more tense than they would’ve been without it. In the acting department, Gyllenhaal and Peña were brilliant, and Anna Kendrick was adorably dorky. I’d really like to see Peña do some more serious stuff like End of Watch, cause I think he’s a brilliant actor who hasn’t quite found the right role that’ll make him shine yet. I originally gave this an 8, but the ending forced me to bump it up a notch. If you’re a movie fan, give it a go, if you’re a crime movie fan, it’s a must-watch, and if you’re a cop movie fan, it’s definitive viewing.Rating: 9 jewel-encrusted handguns out of 10.
